Defy: A New OLW Adventure

Hello scrappy friends! I cannot believe we haven’t had a post yet in 2016. It’s time!

I played along with the Scrap a Selfie challenge Shimelle Laine is hosting this week, and it gave me the perfect excuse to scrapbook my One Little Word® for 2016: defy.

de·fy – verb – openly resist or refuse to obey; to offer effective resistance to

I’ll do most of the class prompts in my journal (I’ll post about that soon), but I like to have a full page layout in my regular yearly albums. It’s a great way to start the journey with my word.

I started with these layers; two papers from the original Shimelle line for American Crafts, one paper from Amy Tangerine Rise and Shine, a background from Kaiser Craft and a stencil I made using my Silhouette Cameo. My OLW journal is looking quite nautical, with a lot of red, blue and grey so far and I wanted to echo that in this layout. It’s been ages since I made anything misty and messy, so I wanted to get my hands dirty too. I added some embossing paste and ink splatters, along with more paper layers.

I have hoarded a small piece of washi tape sent by a friend for many (MANY!) months; I just had a feeling it would come in handy. It was the perfect accent for this page. I chose the anchor as my defy symbol. (Think about it, its sole purpose is to defy the push and pull of the waves around it and remain steady.) I cut the washi so I could add three separate pieces. I didn’t feel the need to add a ton of embellishment – the mist, paste and stencil had already done most of that work for me.

Supplies: KaiserCraft paper, Life.Love.Paper for Studio Calico paper, Shimelle True Stories paper, Shimelle paper, Shimelle paper, Shimelle cut apart paper, Amy Tangerine Rise and Shine paper, The Crafter’s Workshop stencil, homemade stencil from Silhouette Design, Wendy Vecchi embossing paste, Tsukineko Dew Drop ink in grey flannel, Studio Calico Mister Huey’s spray mist in Pinstripe and Passport, Ali Edwards stamp, Pebbles alphas, Teresa Collins stickers, Fancy Pants Designs stickers, washi tape

And that, friends, is my OLW selfie! It’s probably fitting that this is my first layout of 2016. I hope to defy plenty of my own limits this year.  🙂  I hope your year is starting off with some big dreams and good times. Thanks for stopping by!
